Mapping climate change adaptation projects in the Caribbean region

The mapping of Caribbean projects for adapting to climate change in agriculture and food is a tool for learning about existing projects in Guadeloupe, Martinique, Dominica and Saint Lucia on the themes of adapting to climate change in agriculture and food.

The aim is to promote synergies between projects already underway, encourage cooperation between the regions and increase knowledge more quickly, anticipate climate change and reduce its impact.

Key mapping figures and main elements :

  • 85 projects listed
  • 55% of the projects listed are located in Dominica and Saint Lucia
  • 82% of projects focus on resilient agriculture or agro-ecology
  • The majority of projects are still in progress, demonstrating the growing interest in the subject of adaptation to climate change.
  • Saint Lucia, as the most populous territory in the OECS and home to the OECS headquarters, has the most projects working on a regional scale.
  • Projects are financed by a wide range of funders
  • The European Union and its programmes are the main funders of climate change adaptation projects, financing 30% of the projects mapped.
  • The Ministry of Agriculture and Sustainable Development is the second largest funder of climate change adaptation projects.
  • In the French West Indies, the European Union is the main funder, accounting for 63% of funding for climate change adaptation projects.
  • Conversely, the Ministries of Agriculture are the main financiers of climate change adaptation projects in Dominica and Saint Lucia. The Ministries of Agriculture funded 48% of the projects in the English-speaking West Indies targeted.
  • ¼ of projects have funding of up to €250,000
  • The majority of the projects listed are at the production stage, accounting for 77% of the projects mapped.
  • Conversely, there is a shortage of adaptation projects at the processing and waste management stage.
